In compliance with Senate file 2292, effective July 1, 1998, new regulations state that citizens may now request sex offender information at Police Departments as well as Sheriff Department.Iowa law authorizes a Criminal or Juvenile Justice Agency the ability to notify the community about a person required to register with the Iowa Sex Offender Registry when necessary to protect the public. The Keokuk Police Department will provide public notification following a risk assessment completed by the Iowa Department of Correctional Services after consultation with the Lee County Sheriff's Office, the Lee County Attorney's Office, the Keokuk Police Department, and the Iowa Department of Public Safety/Division of Criminal Investigation. This notification and release of information is to serve only as a means for the public to protect themselves. Any action taken by anyone against this person, including vandalism of property, verbal or written threat of physical harm, or physical assault against this person or their family can result in arrest and prosecution. |
